Frankie Edgar has had an illustrious MMA career, but if there is one thing that he regrets, it’s not getting a chance to fight Irish superstar, Conor McGregor.

The two have been linked to each other on numerous occasions. After the McGregor beat Jose Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 in 2015, Edgar was next in line to challenge him for the title. However, a fight between the two never materialised.

Later in 2019, McGregor called out Edgar for a lightweight fight, but the UFC didn’t show any interest in the fight.

McGregor Fight

With McGregor focusing all his energies on the lightweight division now, and Edgar doing his thing at bantamweight, it is highly unlikely that the two will ever cross paths. While the 39 year old understands this, he also feels upset that he never got the chance to fight the Dublin native, he told BJPenn.com.

“Of course it upset me. He is the most popular guy in our sport,” Edgar said. “Anytime you can get in the cage with someone like that you jump at the opportunity. I do think it is in the past, he is at 155 [pounds], maybe even 170 if he fights Nate, I’m a couple of weight classes below.”

Poirier-McGregor Trilogy

In his most recent fight, McGregor was brutally TKO’d by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257, and now both fighters are willing to throw hands a third time for bragging rights. Like most of the MMA world, Edgar is also anticipating a trilogy fight between the two, and praised ‘The Diamond’ for his incredible performance a fortnight ago.

“I don’t know, I’m sure he wants to fight Poirier again and Poirier wants to make some big money,” Edgar speculated. “I have to big up Dustin he had a great performance and is a great guy who has helped me train in the past. I’m just happy for Dustin.”

Edgar is set to face Cory Sandhagen in a potential bantamweight title eliminator at UFC Vegas 18 this weekend.

How would you have rated Frankie Edgar’s chances against Conor McGregor in back in 2016?
